Female Hormone Panel

Hormone imbalance and progesterone overdose.

We did not have a great deal of information on this particular patient. The doctor knew she had symptoms of ovarian hormone imbalance, so he had her take the Pre Menopause Female Hormone Panel (FHP) to "map" her cycle.

What we found was that her estradiol was a little high, her DHEA was normal, and her testosterone was borderline low. However, nine of eleven progesterone samples were off the chart high. The other two samples were quite high, too. In fact, the lowest value for progesterone was about the level we might expect for the high point of a normal luteal phase.

The doctor had not given her any progesterone. Therefore, I concluded the very high progesterone was most likely an overdose caused by exposure. Through the years, progesterone cream has been promoted so heavily and has been the source of most of our overdose cases. However, in the last couple of years, more cases of hormone overdose have come from skin care products "laced" with hormone not on the label.

The first step in helping this patient is for the doctor to become a "detective" and find out where the progesterone is coming from. She will not get well until her progesterone exposure is eliminated. Then she can take another Female Hormone Panel and we can fine tune her hormone therapy.

Warm regards,

Dr. Mark Rhodes, Ph.D.
