Short Thyroid Panel
Poor liver conversion and autoimmune disease.
The patient was experiencing symptoms of low thyroid function. Therefore, the doctor ordered the Short Thyroid Panel (STP) to determine how well the patient's brain, thyroid, and liver were working together.
The STP revealed some functional problems that would have been much more difficult to identify with standard blood tests.
First, the patient's free TSH and free T4 were normal. From that we conclude the brain and thyroid were communicating and working well together. However, low free T3 implies that the liver was having trouble converting T4 to T3. The patient felt "hypothyroid" because her body was not getting enough T3 for proper metabolic processes.
Also, her thyroid microsomal antibody level was positive meaning that her body was attacking her thyroid tissue. At this time, the thyroid seems to be working well. However, it probably is just a matter of time until the thyroid becomes impaired in its ability to produce hormones.
Some doctors use PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) to help reduce the body's attack on the thyroid. I am optimistic the PABA therapy will eventually reduce the antibodies to negative.
In the meantime, the doctor might support the liver with Livit 1, Livit 2, and Guggalip. Livit 1 and Livit 2 are superb liver support products in general. Guggal extract (from Commiphora mukul) has been shown to aid the conversion of T4 to T3. Guggal also exhibits numerous other health benefits including regulation of serum cholesterol and triglycerides.
