Adrenal Stress Index
Stress and recurring colds.
This patient had a very stressful job. He attempted to improve his health but was plagued often by coming down with a cold whenever he tried to increase his physical activity. The doctor expected stress to be a factor so he ordered the Adrenal Stress Index (ASI) so we could actually measure adrenal function.
The ASI revealed normal cortisol during the morning, noon, and afternoon. However, the evening cortisol was a little high. His DHEA was high, too. Total salivary SIgA (immune response) was somewhat depressed. And his gliadin antibody level was positive.
My interpretation is that the patient was not eating a good carbohydrate to protein ratio for his evening meal resulting in low blood sugar by late evening. The high DHEA indicates he has been under stress for a long time. The low SIgA indicates he probably has had high cortisol in the past.
So what should this patient do to regain some of his health? I don't think he will change his job. The doctor could give him some adrenal support supplements. He can pay more attention to the healthy balance of his meals. The positive gliadin antibody level tells us he should avoid gluten. He also could benefit from AmlaPaste and exercise to boost his immune response.
Warm regards,
Dr. Mark Rhodes, Ph.D.
