Female Hormone Panel

Tired, irregular cycle, and low libido.

This patient complained of tiredness, a very irregular cycle, and low libido. The doctor decided to order the 11-sample Female Hormone Panel to help us determine more exactly what her hormonal issues were.

Estradiol was slightly high throughout the cycle. Progesterone was generally low with a very sluggish upswing near the end of the cycle instead of in the middle (the normal timing for ovulation). DHEA and testosterone were both very low.

So, the symptom of fatigue was matched by the low DHEA. Low sex drive was explained by low testosterone and low progesterone. Irregular cycles were partially a result of an abnormal progesterone curve.

The patient was not old enough to treat as post menopausal. Therefore, the doctor intended to administer a graduated progesterone dose throughout the luteal phase (days 16 through 28). He would also consider giving her sublingual DHEA to increase her DHEA levels. We both hoped that some conversion from DHEA to testosterone would occur to help raise the low level. The doctor also was going to address her eating habits and consider getting an Adrenal Stress Index (ASI) at a later time.

Warm regards,

Dr. Mark Rhodes, Ph.D.
