Female Hormone Panel

Missing some periods.

The patient occasionally missed her period. She suspected hormonal imbalance of some kind so went to the doctor for help. The doctor ordered the Female Hormone Panel (FHP) to measure the hormone levels and get a picture of hormonal events throughout a cycle.

Estradiol was high and testosterone was quite high. The estradiol curve showed no distinct peak and drop (that starts the chain of hormonal events toward ovulation). DHEA was normal. The progesterone curve exhibited a couple of abnormalities. First, ovulation did not occur until day 25 of the cycle. Second, although progesterone was high enough at its peak, it was not high for very long and the rapid drop down to baseline often causes symptoms of PMS.

How do we interpret the numbers? The very high testosterone is often indicative of ovarian cysts. Cysts can interfere with hormonal events of a cycle and can influence estradiol levels. Therefore, the doctor might want to have the patient checked to see if she does indeed have one or more cysts.

The patient might also consider using Livit 1 and Livit 2 to aid the liver in clearing the high estradiol and testosterone. She might take extra vitamin C and increase her fiber intake to help remove the excess hormone, too.

Warm regards,

Dr. Mark Rhodes, Ph.D.
