Adrenal Stress Index
Out of sync with the world.
This young patient had dropped out of college, had lost motivation, and often stayed up quite late. The doctor decided to look at his adrenal function with the Adrenal Stress Index (ASI).
I was not surprised to see some of the adrenal hormone values out of range. DHEA was very high. Morning cortisol was low, while noon cortisol was high. Actually, if you shifted every cortisol value to the left one time slot, you ended up with a normal 24-hour curve. That undoubtedly is a function of his staying up too late. In other words, he had shifted his night to the right on the graph.
Also, when we do not sleep approximately with the sun, we get what could be called light toxicity. Light hitting us late at night tends to disrupt our internal clocks reducing our melatonin levels and reducing our immune response in other ways, too. His total salivary secretory IgA (first line of defense against foreign organisms) was very, very low.
The patient could consider taking Adapt for adrenal support and AmlaPaste for immune system support.
I am a big proponent of reducing light exposure late at night. We need darkness to allow our melatonin (a strong antioxidant) to reset our biological clocks. Also, nighttime is when much of our adrenal hormones are replenished. Staying up late also causes us to crave carbohydrates leading to weight gain and a whole host of diseases that follow.
Warm regards,
Dr. Mark Rhodes, Ph.D.
