Adrenal Stress Index
Pain at night after a car wreck.
This is a patient who had been in a car wreck. He continues to have "burning pain" at night. Any kind of pain is a stressor on the adrenals. This wise practitioner ordered the Adrenal Stress Index (ASI) to assess just what impact the pain was having on his patient's adrenals.
Anyone with pain during the night might be expected to exhibit high cortisol then. And that is pretty much what we saw. We don't measure during the night, but his morning cortisol was high. The noon cortisol was low. DHEA was borderline low. Total salivary secretory IgA was depressed, and the gliadin antibody was negative.
The doctor was going to consider Adapt for adrenal support and AmlaPaste to increase the immune response. Also, to address the high cortisol at night we discussed adding a protein-heavy evening snack preceded by a Seriphos capsule. This usually lowers the cortisol and often helps patients sleep much more deeply.
