Short Post Menopause Hormone Panel
Acne and weight gain after the pill.
This patient was in her twenties. Her medical doctor had prescribed birth control pills a couple of years ago. She had stopped taking them but had suffered since with acne, weight gain, and PMS.
The doctor I was consulting with had ordered the Short Post Menopause Hormone Panel (PHP1) to do a "spot check" to see what her hormone levels were on day 19 of her cycle. For day 19 (middle of the luteal phase), we would expect relatively low estradiol and relatively high progesterone. Acne is sometimes caused by high testosterone, so we might expect to see an elevated level.
The PHP1 revealed normal DHEA, high testosterone, acceptable estrone, estradiol, and estriol, and a progesterone level about where we would expect it.
The high level of testosterone was suggestive of ovarian cysts (possibly from her history of hormone use). My suggestions included low-dose sublingual progesterone augmentation for a few months, cutting down on simple carbohydrates, plus fiber, vitamin C, and liver support (Livit 1 and Livit 2) to reduce the high testosterone.
Warm regards,
Dr. Mark Rhodes, Ph.D.
