Short Thyroid Panel
Hair falling out, dry skin, and cold hands.
This patient had some of the familiar symptoms of low thyroid function: hair loss, dry skin, cold hands and feet, and weight gain. Yet the blood tests were normal. So this doctor ordered the Short Thyroid Panel (STP), a saliva test that statistically agrees with symptoms about twice as often as the best blood tests.
Her free TSH was normal. Her free T4 and free T3 were both low. Her thyroid microsomal antibodies were negative.
These results indicate that her brain was detecting enough T4 so it produced a normal level of TSH. I believe the brain has higher priority over other tissues in terms of receiving thyroid hormones. Yet, even with normal TSH, her thyroid was under functioning meaning that her peripheral tissues were not receiving enough T3, thus the symptoms.
So, the patient would benefit from T4 and T3 (Armour Thyroid) augmentation. She might also benefit from Thyro-Dyne, a supplement that helps both thyroid and liver do their jobs.
Warm regards,
Dr. Mark Rhodes, Ph.D.
