Female Hormone Panel

Young woman with irregular cycles.

This woman was way too young to be menopausal, but she was having some problems that sounded like very low progesterone. She had irregular cycles, sometimes 3-4 months between periods, and episodes of spotting. She also complained of mood swings. All of these symptoms could be a result of low progesterone and sounded more like someone in her late 40's instead of her 20's. The doctor ordered the Female Hormone Panel (FHP) to measure just what her current hormone levels were.

The test showed that her DHEA was fine. Her estradiol was high normal. Testosterone was quite high, while progesterone was indeed quite low. Aside from testosterone, her numbers did look like she was post-menopausal. However, the high testosterone gave us what could be a big clue. I suspect she had one or more ovarian cysts (which often result in high androgens).

The doctor was going to give her sublingual progesterone from about days 15 through 28 to help retrain her brain to cycle more normally. And the patient was encouraged to pay special attention to her diet cutting out simple carbohydrates. The doctor was going to encourage our estrogen reduction technique: increase fiber, increase vitamin C, and give liver support (Livit 1 and Livit 2).

Warm regards,

Dr. Mark Rhodes, Ph.D.
