Adrenal Stress Index

Hypertension and hypotension.

This patient had suffered with bouts of hypertension (high blood pressure) and hypotension (low blood pressure) for some time. The doctor used the Adrenal Stress Index (ASI) to determine if and how adrenal function might be improved.

Her DHEA was borderline low. Morning cortisol was low with readings later in the day being normal. The result was a fairly low and flat cortisol curve. This is what we see often with diabetics, some people who are not sleeping well, and people who are taking certain medications.

Immune response (total salivary secretory IgA) was normal, and gliadin antibodies (SIgA) was borderline positive.

Putting our heads together, we would ask the patient to consider avoiding gluten, take adrenal support supplements like B complex or Adapt, and take a low dose of sublingual DHEA. She might also take a low dose of Licorice Root first thing in the morning to increase the half life of her low morning cortisol. Licorice has been known to affect blood pressure, so the doctor will want to monitor her hormonal progress by using the ASI and taking her blood pressure.

Warm regards,

Dr. Mark Rhodes, Ph.D.
